LASIK

Our doctors have performed laser vision correction since 1995. Initially, photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was the most popular and widespread procedure. At that time, only low to moderately nearsighted patients without astigmatism could be treated. PRK involves ablating the patient’s prescription onto the surface of the cornea after the surface epithelial layer has been removed.

Today, Lasik has become the preferred treatment for nearly all degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  In Lasik, an instrument called a microkeratome is used to create a surgical flap in the cornea.

 

The flap is reflected and the laser is used to treat the central layer of the cornea. The flap is then repositioned where it adheres in place. The main advantage of Lasik is that patients have less post operative discomfort, require fewer eyedrops, and have an extremely rapid return of vision, usually within a few days.
